CABALA fast Day Two: Winter Solstice chills

Today was my second day on the CABALA juice fast, and the shortest day of the year in the Southern hemisphere. So I guess that’s a win because I had to not eat for less time than on any other day of the year. The flip side was its bloody cold and cold juice just makes you feel colder.

Yes I was hungry. Yes everyone else’s lunches smelt amazing. Yes I questioned my resolve. Yes I stuck to the plan. Yes I realised how much pleasure I derive from food on a daily basis. The image above is this morning’s harvest of 3L of CABALA juice after 45 minutes of chopping, juicing and cleaning up.

I also went for my morning run, against advice to only do mild exercise on the first few days. I did take it easy tho, plus I would go nuts in a day at the office without my morning gasp of fresh air, forest and wave-watching.

At lunch time I went for a stroll to the nearest health shop from work and found all the ingredients for the broth recipe my acupuncturist friend gave me, all at cost price. Plus bought 6 more kilos of carrots, going through those babies like a fiend.

I guess my body made the decision for me that in the middle of Winter, she wants some warmth. So I am brewing the broth now. Never before has a saucepan of green vegetables looked and smelt so appealing. If nothing else, my cold beachside unit needed something bubbling on the stove. This is Ayurveda, this is living according to the seasons, this makes sense.

The recipe is simple:

Chop up organic kale, spinach, celery and parsley, bring it to the boil, then simmer it for half an hour to an hour. Strain all the solids out and keep the broth. The broth can be frozen or kept in the fridge and reheated while retaining its qualities. Serve with cayenne pepper and lemon for extra effect.

I think I’ll drink the broth after midday and in the evening to keep me warm from the inside. I’m slightly stressed that I’m cheating or not following the CABALA cleanse properly… but what harm can a little veggie broth do? I think it will enhance the cleanse. And my instincts are guiding me, as well as a couple of trustworthy friends, including Google.

Here is a picture of some innocent looking vegetable broth, just made by yours truly. Ok so it looks like a glass of James Squire One Fifty Lashes Pale Ale, but that’s only because I’ve served it up in a schooner, which was all that was available to me at my current abode. I just sipped it and it tastes like Chinese herbal medicine. But way nicer.

Veggie Broth Not Beer

Yes I have the word “adventure” lit up in lights on my lounge room wall. I am house sitting the home of some brilliant musician friends of mine who are currently touring Europe. It makes for a good backdrop for boring juicing and brothing photographs anyway. So thanks dear friends! I am loving it here.

    According to the CATALYST program on the ABC last night, certain dieting causes the organs to jettison old cells which are responsible for ageing. When you return to your new sensible diet, new cells are rejuvenated and because they are “young” they are not only anti-ageing, they also combat the diseases of ageing: diabetes, cardiovascular, Alzheimer’s etc. go with it CC … the chemistry is with you!
